Last Thursday I danced at XLarge Club for their first ever Ladies Nite show. It's a gay club and supposedly the "biggest" one in town...but by no means does that make it the easiest to find. On my first two tries I couldn't find it...walked pass the place several times. Like most spots in Istanbul XLarge situated on some little curving, winding, narrow cobblestone street that reminds one of espionage films.
So it was my first gig in town and I was plenty excited. Was also looking forward to dancing for a (foreign) female audience, for a change. Since nothing like this had ever been put on in Turkey we weren't sure how big of a crowd to expect or how they'd react and interact -- so it was ixnay on the full monty...for now. The headline attraction was a dance troupe from Romania. Y'know the type: pretty boy Aryan bodybuilders and gigolos with super gel spiked hair, big shiny costume jewelry, soft-looking skin, tight jeans, and a style that desperately strives to be posh and "Western". There were five of them plus three Turkish studs plus me (one of the dancers is not in the picture).
I strip danced to Rihanna's "Rude Boy". (Can you believe I was one of only two dancers to strip down to a thong?) I think my number went well. The crowd reaction felt positive but, nope, nobody tipped me. That didn't bother me at all. Realizing that nearly half the room was watching behind phone cameras did bother me. Wtf?
After that I took to the stage with the other dancers and gogo danced a couple numbers. It wasn't until the finale when all nine of us were out together that I felt a tug on my jeans - I just went out shirtless - and looked down just in time to see a lady scampering away. Backstage I discovered it was a nice crinkled $50 lira note. Hello!
